Morton's Neuroma
A neuroma is a thickening of nerve tissue and can develop throughout the body. In the foot, the most common neuroma is a Morton’s neuroma; this typically forms between the third and fourth toes. The thickening of the nerve is typically caused by compression and irritation of the nerve; this thickening can in turn cause enlargement and, in some cases, nerve damage.
Neuromas can be caused by anything that causes compression or irritation of the nerve. A common cause is wearing shoes with tapered toe boxes or high heels that force the toes into the toe boxes. Physical activities that involve repeated pressure to the foot, such as running or basketball, can also create neuromas. Those with foot deformities, such as bunions, hammertoes, or flatfeet, are more likely to develop the condition.

Osteoarthritis of the Big Toe

Osteoarthritis or OA is a common form of arthritis that can affect any joint in the body. This type of arthritis generally increases with age, and those who are obese, have a genetic predisposition to it, or a prior joint injury are at higher risk. Cartilage in joints wear down, bones are exposed, and they can rub against each other. The base of the big toe is a common site for OA. The joint degenerates and the body may attempt to repair the condition by growing more bone. This reaction can create bony protrusions called bone spurs that appear as a visible bump or callus on the big toe joint. The excess bone growth can lead to fusion of the joint and it can become fixed/non-bending. The joint of the big toe may also look inflamed and swollen. It becomes painful and hard to walk if one cannot bend their toe, and if spurs or bunions develop, they can push uncomfortably against shoes. Usually, OA in the big toe is worse after inactivity, such as when first arising in the morning or after prolonged sitting. Wearing shoes that have sufficient room in the toe box and stiff soles, obtaining pad inserts or arch supports, using ice on the big toe, maintaining a healthy body weight, and/or taking over-the-counter pain relievers can help but there is no cure for OA. Although there are many different forms of arthritis, there are three main types that occur in the foot. The three types are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.
The primary cause of osteoarthritis is aging. As you age, cartilage degenerates around the joints which causes friction and pain. Obesity can cause osteoarthritis through mechanical stress. Injuries that damage joints can increase the probability as well. Finally, a family history of osteoarthritis can also increase chances of having it.
Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system attacks the joint linings and weakens them over a long time. While there is no known cause of rheumatoid arthritis, obesity and smoking can increase your chances of getting it. Women are also more likely to get it than men.
Gout is a form of arthritis that occurs when there is too much uric acid in your blood and painful crystals form in your joints. Men are more likely to have gout than women. People who are obese or drink alcohol often are also more likely to develop gout. Furthermore, having diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gastric bypass surgery or a family history of gout may increase your likelihood of developing the condition.

Exercise for Your Feet
Whether your feet are over-worked or under-worked, chances are they could benefit from some special attention. Even those who exercise regularly probably do not spend any time strengthening their feet. This can be just as rewarding as strengthening the rest of the body, since the health of your feet affects the health of the rest of the body as well, especially the ankles, legs, and spine.
For those who might not have any idea on how a foot-specific exercise might be conducted, there are several workouts that are fairly easy to perform in the comfort of ones’ home. One of the easiest is the toe rise, also known as the tip-toe. This exercise involves standing on the tip-toes for a count of 15 then resting the feet on the ground. This process should be repeated a minimum of three times a day in order to strengthen the feet.
Toe pick-ups strengthen the feet by working them in a very different way. In this exercise, small items are picked up using the toes in order to strengthen the muscles on the upper part of the feet. Once again three sets should be performed, with the item in question being held for 15 seconds then dropped. Items that may be picked up using the feet include marbles and even stationery, which works wonders for the toes and the surrounding muscles.
Yet another simple workout is the ankle pump. This can be done either upwards or downwards, but for the workout to be most effective both can be incorporated into the routine. As the term suggests, this involves lifting the foot off the floor and flexing the toes either towards the shin or towards the ground. This movement puts the feet and ankles through a large range of motion which works the muscles.
Last but not least, feet should be stretched so that the muscles can relax and recuperate. This can be done by placing both feet off of the floor and bracing oneself against the wall at a 45 degree angle. This ensures that the feet and ankles are adequately stretched once the workout is complete.
In short, giving the feet a good workout every now and then is important in order to avoid problems such as plantar fasciitis. It’s also important to warm-up or cool-down after running or vigorous walking. Foot exercises may be followed by a good foot massage. This encourages circulation in the feet as well as muscle relaxation.
What Causes Pain in the Arch?

If you are experiencing pain along the inside of the arch on your foot, it may be caused by a strain of the abductor hallucis muscle. Strains can range from a mild stretch to a complete tear or rupture. Symptoms include pain and tenderness when you press the sole of the foot especially on the inside, as well as swelling and loss of function depending on the severity. The abductor hallucis muscle runs from the heel to the big toe. Its main job is to support the arch and keep it from rolling inward, also known as overpronation, with each step. A mild strain may go away after a few days with rest from the activity that caused it. Icing the affected foot may also help relieve the pain. If the symptoms continue or worsen, it is a good idea to see a podiatrist for an examination. Treatment may include anti-inflammatory medication, ultrasound therapy, or custom orthotics.

What Are Flat Feet?
Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.
